NEWPORT, RI (June 9, 1996) - Defending 1995 League Champion Sony Autosound returned to the winners circle with their first tournament victory on the young season. Team captain Doug Partie (Encinitas, Calif./UCLA) lead the charge with a weekend performance that included 32 kills and 9 blocks.
Team Outdoor Products blazed through round robin play and into the champion round. Their agressive play all weekend caught up with them in the finals as they were defeated and finished in second place with a 3-1 record.
Last weekend's champion Team OP finished in third place with a 1-3 record. Outside hitter Mike Diehl's strong tournament stats of 41 kills and 6 blocks failed to help his team collect more victories.
This was not the weekend for last week's second place finisher, Team Paul Mitchell. In addition to captain Jeff Williams (Santa Monica, Calif./UCLA) missing this tournament for the Olympic Beach Volleyball Qualifiers in Baltimore, their newly signed middle blocker Leland Quinn was injured during play today. The team finished 1-3 on the day.
The women's tour will rejoin the men next week in Detroit, MI for the fourth competition of the year. Next week, the women's show will be broadcast live on ESPN on Sunday, June 16th at 2:30p.m., EST.

DEFENDING LEAGUE CHAMPIONS SONY AUTOSOUND 2-1
AT BUD LIGHT PRO BEACH VOLLEYBALL NEWPORT, RI STOP
NEWPORT,RI (June 8th)--Defending 1995 League Champions Sony Autosound finished the first day of competition with a 2-1 record. The strong team play of team captain and 1992 bronze medalist Doug Partie (Encinitas, Calif./UCLA) was a definite inspiration. The former NCAA standout finished the day with 20 kills and 5 blocks.
Mike Diehl (Huntington Beach, Calif./UCLA) was the stand out player of the day. The 1994 Rookie of the Year and former Bruin finished the day with 35 kills and 5 blocks. Despite his strong play, Team OP (last weekend's tournament champions) finished 1-2 on the day.
Team Paul Mitchell, last weekend's 2nd place team, ended the day with a 1-2 mark. The absence of team captain Jeff Williams (Santa Monica, Calif/UCLA) proved to be a factor in the team's poor play. Williams and OP member Carlos Briceno (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of Hawaii) are down in Baltimore at the Olympic Beach Qualifier matches this weekend.
Team Outdoor Products finshed the day at 1-2.
Men's action will resume tommorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. Both the semifinal and the final will be shot for the ESPN television networks.
