Outdoor Products recorded it's second tournament victory in a row in impresive fashion, 15-8, over Team Paul Michell at the Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball League at San Diego's Mariner's Point. Home court advantage definitely played a factor in the win, as a spirited crowd cheered Outdoor's three San Diego area residents all game long. Captain Dan Hanan (San Diego, Calif./Stanford) led the charge for Outdoor with 6 kills and 2 blocks. Huntington Beach's Mark Presho (Univ. of Hawaii) posted 4 kills for Paul Mitchell.
Sony Autosound (2-2) finished in third place after losing to Paul Mitchell in the semi-finals 11-7. Team Ocean Pacific recorded a 1-3 fourth place mark and will drop to third place in the overall league standings.
In the women's tournament, Team Sony Autosound defeated Team Discus Athletic 14-11 to earn their third league tournament title. Sony Autosound, which finished in third place in the last four tournaments, was led by Kim Oden's (San Diego, Calif./Stanford) 15 kills and 2 blocks. Discus was paced by Katy Eldridge (Petaluma, Calif./Univ of the Pacific) with 12 kills.
Team Norelco finished in third place after losing to Sony Autosound in the semi-finals 15-9. 1996 League leader Paul Mitchell finished in a suprising fourth place with a 1-3 mark. Gabrielle Reece (La Jolla, Calif/Florida State) and team NIKE ended the tournament in fifth place.
The Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball League wraps up it's season next weekend in Santa Cruz, Calif. as the men and women 1996 League Champions will be crowned at the conclusion of play. Round robin competition begins on Friday, August 30th.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (August 24, 1996) -- Team Outdoor Products will advance to the men's final with a 3-0 mark at the Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball League at Mariner's Point. Outdoor Products, paced by the strong play of San Diego residents Dan Hanan (Stanford) and Eric Sato (Pepperdine) will face the winner of tommorrow's semi-final match between OP (1-2) vs. Paul Mitchell (1-2).
In the women's tournament, Team Discus Athletic (4-0) will receive an automatic bid into the finals to await the winner of the Team Sony Autosound (3-1) and Team Norelco (2-2) semi-final match. Captain Stephanie Cox will steer Team Discus to their 7th finals appearance of the year. Team Paul Mitchell, who finished the day with a 1-3 mark, will miss the tournament finals for the first time in 4 weeks. Team NIKE, captained by Gabrielle Reece (La Jolla, Calif./Florida State) posted a 0-4 mark. Reece, who was having another strong tournament, was injured in the team's third match and will likely miss the remainder of the 1996 season.
Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball action will resume tommorrow with the men's semi-final matches beginning at 9 a.m. followed by the women's semi-final at 11 a.m. The women's final is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., with the men's final to follow at 2:30 p.m. Both will be taped for broadcast on ESPN.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (August 23, 1996) -- Discus Athletic, led by UCLA All-American Alyson Randick (13 kills and 6 blocks), finished 2-0 after the first 5 rounds of women's play at the Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament in San Diego. Discus will look to finish strong in tommorrow's round robin play and make their 6th finals appearance of the year.
After winning the last four consecutive tournaments, League leading Team Paul Mitchell posted a 1-1 mark. Team Sony Autosound lost a tough back and forth match with Discus 16-15 to finish 1-1. Team Norelco finished 1-1 on the day with Gabrielle Reece's (La Jolla, Calif./Florida State) Team NIKE finishing at 0-2. Women's tournament play will continue tommorrow at 1:00 p.m. with Team NIKE vs. Team Discus Athletic. The women's final is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Sunday
