STEFFES AND LOIOLA CLAIM FIFTH TOURNAMENT WIN OF THE
SEASON AT THE $100,000 AVP SOUTH TEXAS OPEN
PRESENTED BY BRUKENHOEFER LAW FIRM

CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex. (May 18, 1997) -- Kent Steffes and jose Loiola won their fifth tournament of the season on the Miller Lite/AVP Tour by a score of 5-0 as the No. 5 seeded tandem of Randy Stoklos and Troy Tanner withdrew due to medical reasons at the $100,000 AVP South Texas Open presented by Brukenhoefer Law Firm.

Stoklos and Tanner, who were making their second consecutive tournament final appearance of the season, fell behind 5-0 to the No. 1 seeds and did not retake the court after the first side change as Tanner could not continue play due to severe cramping.

Steffes, a gold medalist at the 1996 Summer Olympics, And Loiola, the 1997 King of the Beach, advanced to the championship match after defeating No. 6 seeds Dain Blanton and Canyon Ceman, 15-13, in the winner's bracket final. Stoklosa and Tanner then defeated Blanton and Ceman in the contender's bracket final, 15-10, to meet Steffes and Loiola for the Corpus Christi title.

The suprise team of the weekend was the wildcard pair of Brazilians Guilherme Marques and Rogerio Para who finished fourth after upsetting No. 3 seeds Brian Lewis and Bill Boullianne, 16-14.

The Miller Lite/AVP Tour concludes its "Tour Texas" May 24-25 as it resumes at the $100,000 AVP San Antonio Open. For ticket information contact Tele-charge at (800) 432-7470.
