UNDERDOGS UPSET OLYMPIC SILVER MEDALISTS TO WIN MILLER LITE/AVP CHAMPIONSHIPS OF NEW ENGLAND

HYANNIS, MA (July 6, 1997) - Playing in their first tournament together, the underdog team of Mark Kerins and Henry Russell upset 1996 Olympic medalists Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh 15-5 to win the $135,000 Miller Lite/AVP Championships of New England. The tournament win was the first of their careers for both Kerins and Russell on the Miller Lite/AVP Tour.

The tournament, held on the man-made beach at Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis, marked the first time the Miller lite/AVP Tour has been on the Cape since 1993.

Kerins and Russell, who teamed up for the first time this week, are the second team to break into the win column this year. Dain Blanton and Canyon Ceman also became first time winners as they won the Miller Lite/AVP Hermosa Beach Grand Slam back in June.

"I've spent countless hours picturing this moment in my mind and how I would react", said Kerins. "The taste of victory is even sweeter than the thought of it."

Both players were making only their second appearance in an AVP final. Kerins, a former member of the U.S. National Volleyball Team, made the final at the Coppertone Championships of Florida and Russell, who won the 1996 Most Improved Player award, made the final at the AVP San Antonio Open.

The top seeded team of Randy Stoklos and Troy Tanner were eliminated yesterday. Dain Blanton and Canyon Ceman dispatched Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson to take third place. Kiraly and Johnson took home fourth place.

The Miller lite/AVP Tour travels to the state of michigan this week for the $135,000 Miller Lite/AVP Midwest Championships in Grand Haven, MI. Tickets for the event are available by calling Tele-charge at (800) 432-7470.
