STEFFES TEAMS WITH LOIOLA TO CLAIM HIS 100TH CAREER WIN AT THE $125,000 MILLER LITE OPEN AT MILWAUKEE

MILWAUKEE (July 20, 1997) -- Olympic gold medalist Kent Steffes claimed his 100th career victory on the Miller Lite/AVP Tour as he and partner Jose Loiola teamed to win their 11th tournament of the season with a 10-8 decision over No. 5 seeds Bill Boulliane and Troy Tanner at the $125,000 Miller Lite Open at Milwaukee.

Tanner and Boulliane playing in their first tournament together, advanced to the final undefeated in the winner's bracket. They defeated Steffes and Loiola earlier in the day, 15-13, to place them in the contender's bracket. On their way to the final they also defeated No. 4 seeds Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson 15-12, No. 14 seeds Brian Gatzke and Eduardo Bacil, 15-5, No. 12 seeds Kevin Wong and Raul Papaleo 15-4, and No. 28 seeds Aaron Smith and David Smith 15-3.

Steffes' victory marks the third time he has won in Milwaukee, the home of Tour sponsor Miller Brewing Company, and currently ranks fourth all-time with 100 career tournament wins.

Loiola, who teamed with Adam Johnson to win last year's Milwaukee tourney, and Steffes advanced to the finals after defeating No. 14 seeds Eduardo Bacil and Brian Gatzke 10-5 in the contender's bracket final match.

Bacil and Gatzke recorded a third-place finish while playing in their first tournament together after they fell to Steffes and Loiola. No. 11 seeds Andrew Smith and Eric Wurts took home fifth-place finish after they also fell to Steffes and Loiola, 15-3.

Olympic silver medalists Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh claimed the other fifth-place position as they suffered a 15-12 loss to No. 10 seeds Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers, who both set a career high with their fourth-place finish.

The Miller Lite/AVP Tour resumes July 25-27 for the third leg of the Miller Lite Grand Slam Series as it returns to Hermosa Beach, for the $300,000 Miller Lite/U.S. Championships at Hermosa Beach. Tickets are still available by contacting Telecharge at (800) 432-7470.
