SATURDAY-SUNDAY (MAIN DRAW)
SUNDAY
BOSS & SMITH NET FIRST PRO BEACH VOLLEYBALL TITLE;
AVP PAUL MITCHELL OPEN AT VIRGINIA BEACH CONCLUDES SUNDAY IN THE RAIN
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - Fifth-seeded Aaron Boss and Collin Smith avenged an early morning loss here Sunday (July 29) to score a 21-19 and 21-19 win over eighth-seeded Ian Clark and Adam Jewell in the finals of The Paul Mitchell Open at Virginia Beach.
The 38-minute title match was played in a driving rainstorm on the Sixth Avenue Beach. Boss and Smith recovered from a 21-12 and 21-18 loss to Clark and Jewell in Sunday's opening match played to win their next three matches to earn a share of the $14,000 first-place prize in the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event.
"This is great," said Smith of his first pro beach title in four seasons of play. "The rainy conditions were the same for both teams. I thought we played very steady in the championship match after being really tight this morning. We got down early in both matches, but were able to come back with some big plays."
Smith's best previous finish was a fourth earlier this season in Huntington Beach with Mike Lambert while Boss had posted a fourth in 1998 with Albert Hannemann in Atlanta. Hannemann teamed with Sean Scott to capture third place Sunday with a 21-14 and 21-12 win over fourth-seeded Scott Ayakatubby and Eduardo Bacil.
Clark and Jewell, who were playing in only their second pro beach event together after placing 13th last weekend in Muskegon, shared $9,250 for second-place. The third-seeded Hannemann and Scott split $6,600 for third
while Ayakatubby and Bacil shared $4,850.
The top two-seeded teams in the Paul Mitchell Open at Virginia Beach were eliminated earlier Sunday. Top-seeded Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh placed seventh after losing 17-21, 21-19 and 15-13 to Ayakatubby and Bacil. Second-seeded Brent Doble and Lee LeGrande, who had won the previous two AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour stops, placed fifth after being eliminated by Boss and Smith 21-18, 19-21 and 16-14 in 72-minutes.
"This was not an easy day of play for any of the teams," said Boss, who is in the midst eighth-season on the beach. "I thought we were the steadier team in the finals. Smooth (Smith's nickname) made some great digs and we were able to overcome some early game difficulties to win."
Sunday's competition ended a three-week eastern swing for the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball tour after stops in Muskegon, Mich. (July 13-15) and Belmar, N. J. (July 20-22). Brighton Entertainment of New York, N. Y. taped The Paul Mitchell Open at Virginia Beach action for replay August 6 on FOX Sports Net.
Doble and LeGrande had won the last two Sundays (July 15 in Muskegon and July 22 in Belmar) on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. Doble and LeGrande were seeking to become the first AVP team since August 1998 to win three straight titles when Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson won events in Milwaukee, Atlanta and Hermosa Beach, Calif.
The AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour takes the next two weekends off before resuming play with California stops in Santa Barbara (August 17-19) and Manhattan Beach (August 24-26). The 2001 AVP season concludes September 7-9 in Las Vegas, Nev., for The Paul Mitchell King and Queen of the Beach competitions at the Hard Rock Hotel.
SATURDAY
UPSETS HIGHLIGHT PLAY SATURDAY IN THE PAUL MITCHELL OPEN AT VIRGINIA BEACH;
AVP PRO BEACH VOLLEYBALL TOUR EVENT CONCLUDES SUNDAY
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - The teams of Aaron Boss/Colin Smith, Ian Clark/Adam Jewell and Paul Baxter/Matt Fuerbringer posted upset wins here Saturday (July 28) on the Sixth Avenue Beach to lead eight tandems into Sunday's final rounds of The Paul Mitchell Open at Virginia Beach.
With many of the United States' top men pro beach volleyball players vying for $62,500 in prize money, The Paul Mitchell Open at Virginia Beach concludes Sunday on six sand courts at the Sixth Street Beach site behind the Ramada Inn on Atlantic Avenue.
Sunday's competition starts at 8 a.m. (EDT) with the final 10 matches being played. The final two matches will begin approximately at 1 p.m. Sunday. Brighton Entertainment of New York, N. Y., will be taping The Paul Mitchell Open at Virginia Beach action for replay August 6 on FOX Sports Net.
Seeded eighth in the 32-team Main Draw, Clark and Jewell scored a 21-16 and 24-22 win over top-seeded Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh to advance to Sunday's final rounds with a 3-0 match mark. Boss and Smith also won three matches Saturday, including a 21-15 and 21-14 upset win over fourth-seeded Scott Ayakatubby and Eduardo Bacil.
Clark and Jewell "spoiled" a celebration for Whitmarsh Saturday as the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Pro Beach Volleyball Tour veteran was celebrating the five-year anniversary of his Silver Medal finish at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games with Mike Dodd.
Baxter and Fuerbringer, who were seeded 10th, scored a 22-20, 16-21 and 15-13 win over second-seeded Brent Doble and Lee LeGrande. Doble and LeGrande have won the last two Sundays (July 15 in Muskegon and July 22 in Belmar) on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. Doble and LeGrande had won their last 14 matches before losing to Baxter and Fuerbringer.
Clark and Jewell challenge Boss and Smith in Sunday's first match of the winner's bracket. Albert Hannemann and Scott meet Baxter and Fuerbringer in the second winner's bracket semi-final. Baxter and Fuerbringer are playing
in their first AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event.
The two crowns give the Doble/LeGrande partnership three AVP titles the past two seasons. Doble and LeGrande are seeking Sunday to become the first AVP team since August 1998 to win three straight titles when Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson won events in Milwaukee, Atlanta and Hermosa Beach, Calif.
Also advancing to Sunday's play with 3-0 match mark was third-seeded Albert
Hannemann/Sean Scott, who scored a 21-18 and 21-10 win over sixth-seeded Nick Hannemann and David Swatik. Albert Hannemann and Scott finished second in Belmar where they dropped the title match to Doble and LeGrande.
Four other teams will remain in contention for $14,000 first-place prize entering Sunday's opening elimination matches. Ceman and Whitmarsh play Ayakatubby and Bacil in the first elimination match while ninth-seeded Scott Davenport and Jeff Nygaard challenge Doble and LeGrande.
Ayakatubby and Bacil defeated Ceman and Whitmarsh in the finals of The Paul Mitchell Open last month in Huntington Beach, Calif. Nygaard, a two-time indoor Olympian for the United States, and Davenport will be looking for their best career finish together after posting a seventh at Huntington Beach.
FRIDAY
FOUR-TEAMS QUALIFY FOR THE PAUL MITCHELL OPEN MAIN DRAW;
TOP AVP TEAMS BEGIN PLAY SATURDAY AT VIRGINIA BEACH'S SIXTH AVENUE BEACH
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - Top-seeded Mike Daniel and Jacob Gibb finally earned a Main Draw berth this season in an Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event here Friday (July 27) by winning both of their Qualification Tournament matches on the opening day of The Paul Mitchell Open at Virginia Beach.
After failing to advance to the Main Draw in their previous three AVP qualifiers in Huntington Beach, Calif., Muskegon, Mich., and Belmar, N. J., Daniel (Pleasant Grove, Utah) and Gibb (Salt Lake City, Utah) advanced to Saturday's opening Main Draw rounds with an 18-21, 21-17 and 15-12 win over eighth-seeded Andre Melo and Jason Wight.
"What a relief," said Daniel after the match. "We have been disappointed with ourselves the past three events. It is tough to travel a long distance and get eliminated before the money rounds. We are finding out that there are a lot of
good beach volleyball players in these qualifiers. You can't take a local team for granted."
Also qualifying for Saturday's opening Main Draw rounds are third-seeded Chris Kosty (Fountain Valley, Calif.)/Ed Ratledge (Fountain Valley, Calif.), the fifth-seeded DiPierro brothers (David and Michael of Pompano Beach, Fla.) and 10th-seeded Dan Camacho (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)/Kevin Craig (Ocean City, Md.).
With many of the United States' top men pro beach volleyball players vying for $62,500 in prize money, The Paul Mitchell Open at Virginia Beach will be played on six sand courts at the Sixth Street Beach site behind the Ramada Inn on Atlantic Avenue. Saturday's competition starts at 9 a.m. (EDT) with 48 Main Draw matches being played.
Sunday's competition starts at 7:30 a.m. with the final 14 matches being played. The final two matches will begin approximately at 1 p.m. Sunday. Brighton Entertainment of New York, N. Y., will be taping The Paul Mitchell Open at Virginia Beach action for replay August 6 on FOX Sports Net.
The 2001 AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour season opened with a pair of events in Southern California last month with a combined men's and women's event in Hermosa Beach (June 8-10) and a men's tournament in Huntington Beach (June 15-17). The Paul Mitchell Open at Virginia Beach marks the third-straight weekend of play after stops in Muskegon, Mich., and Belmar.
The men's Main Draw competition will feature Brent Doble and LeGrande, who teamed the last two Sundays (July 15 in Muskegon and July 22 in Belmar) to win AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour titles. The two crowns give the
Doble/LeGrande partnership three AVP titles the past two seasons. Doble and LeGrande will also be seeking to become the first AVP team since August 1998 to win three straight titles when Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson won events in Milwaukee, Atlanta and Hermosa Beach.
Doble and LeGrande scored a 21-16 and 23-21 upset win over Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh to win the 49-minute finale in Muskegon. Doble and LeGrande defeated Ceman and Whitmarsh in the Belmar semi-finals before scoring a 21-16, 20-22 and 15-9 win over Albert Hannemann and Scott in the 64-minute New Jersey title match.
Scott Ayakatubby and Eduardo Bacil, who won the Huntington Beach event when they defeated Ceman and Whitmarsh in the finals, are also expected to battle for The Paul Mitchell at Virginia Beach title. Ayakatubby and Bacil placed fourth in Belmar after dropping their final match to Ceman and Whitmarsh. Ayakatubby is returning to the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour after being sidelined much of the past four seasons with injuries.
Whitmarsh, who captured the Silver Medal with Mike Dodd at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, is the AVP's reigning "King of the Beach" after winning the crown last October in Las Vegas. With his third-place Belmar finish, Whitmarsh became the seventh pro beach volleyball player to surpass the $1.5-million mark in earnings. With 27 titles and an Olympic Silver Medal finish in 1996 at Atlanta with Mike Dodd, Whitmarsh has now totaled $1,501,716 in his career.
