JOHNSON/KIRALY MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW BY TAKING THE $100,000 AVP GOLDEN STATE OPEN

VETERAN DUO BEATS LOIOLA/STEFFES IN MILLER LITE/AVP FINAL AMONG OLD FRIENDS

GRANITE BAY, Calif. (Aug. 3, 1997) -- In a nostalgic final that featured four of beach volleyball's greatest players, No. 3-seeded Adam Johnson and Karch Kiraly defeated top-seeded Jose Loiola and Kent Steffes, 15-8, today to win the $100,000 AVP Golden State Open, presented by Albertsons at Granite Bay, Calif.

Johnson and Kiraly won their second straight Miller Lite/AVP Tour event, taking the Miller Lite U.S. Championships last week at Hermosa Beach, but had to detour through the contender's bracket to get there. After losing to No. 7-seeded Eric Fonoimoana and David Swatik, 14-10, in this morning's winner's semifinals, Johnson/Kiraly beat 14th-seeded Aaron Boss and Dan Castillo, 15-1, and No. 6-seeded Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers, 15-3. Johnson/Kiraly got revenge against Fonoimoana/Swatik with a 15-10 victory in the contender's final.

"It was great winning last week, but we're really excited about winning here," said Kiraly. "For one, we had to go through the contender's bracket to do it, and two, we beat the number one team on the beach. We didn't make many mistakes, we controlled the ball well and we were able to be patient once we got ahead."

Dominant throughout the two-day tournament until the final, Steffes and Loiola began Sunday's competition with a 15-8 win over No. 12-seeded Raul Papaleo and Kevin Wong and then dispatched Fonoimoana and Swatik in the winner's bracket final, 15-5.

The Miller Lite/AVP Tour returns to action at the $135,000 AVP Fox Sports Net Open in Vail, Colorado on Aug. 8-10. Tickets are available in advance by calling TeleCharge at (800) 432-7470.
