MICHELOB LIGHT MANHATTAN BEACH OPEN FINALS HAVE A GOODWILL GAMES LOOK

Fontana & Youngs Capture Women's Title; Metzger & Wong Net Men's Crown

MANHATTAN BEACH, CALIF. - The Goodwill Games started three days early here Sunday (August 26) as the finalists for both the men's and women's title matches in the Michelob Light Manhattan Beach Open featured teams that will be competing for the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) starting Wednesday in Brisbane, Australia.

Fifth-seeded Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong won the men's Michelob Light Open Manhattan Beach title by defeating eighth-seeded Eric Fonoimoana and Rob Heidger 21-17, 18-21 and 15-10 in the 65-minute championship match on The Pier Centre Court before an overflowing crowd of 5,000. Wong captured his
fourth pro beach title, including three with Metzger this season.

The men's winners shared the $17,400 for their third win this season and second-straight on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour after winning last week in Santa Barbara. Echo Entertainment of Studio City, Calif., taped the
Michelob Light Manhattan Beach Open action for broadcast September 3 on FOX Sports Net.

In the women's Michelob Light Manhattan Beach Open final, top-seeded Barbra Fontana and Elaine Youngs defeated second-seeded Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak 21-17 and 21-19 in 49 minutes for the $17,400 first-place prize in the $150,000 event. Fontana won her 20th pro beach title Sunday and Youngs her 14th. The win also earned Fontana and Youngs another $7,500 for winning the "Michelob Light California Swing" title by each compiling 786 points for events in Hermosa Beach, Santa Barbara and Manhattan Beach.

For the second-straight week, Metzger and Wong advanced through the elimination bracket to reach an AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour finale. Metzger and Wong, who defeated Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers for last week's AVP Santa Barbara title, advanced to Sunday's final by defeating third-seeded Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh (22-24, 21-17 and 15-8).

Fonoimoana, who won the Gold Medal with Dain Blanton at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, and Heidger defeated the top-seeded Holdren and Rogers twice this weekend to advance to their first title match in 16 pro beach events together. Fonoimoana and Heidger, who placed fifth in Sydney with Wong after being eliminated by Blanton and Fonoimoana, opened play Sunday by defeating Metzger and Wong 21-19, 18-21 and 15-13 in 68 minutes before scoring a 17-21, 24-22 and 16-14 semi-final win over Holdren and Rogers. Metzger and Wong scored a 21-18 and 21-16 win over 17th-seeded Eduardo Bacil and Mike Lambert to advance to their semi-final match against Ceman and Whitmarsh.

Fontana and Youngs advanced to the title match with a win over sixth-seeded Jennifer Meredith and Wendy Stammer (21-16, 19-21 and 15-10) while Arce and McPeak earned a title shot with a win over fifth-seeded Dianne DeNecochea and Liz Masakayan (21-14 and 21-18). Meredith and Stammer won the third-place
match 17-21, 21-14 and 15-13 over DeNecochea and Masakayan.

Ceman and Whitmarsh captured the men's third-place match by scoring a 21-18 and 21-15 over Holdren and Rogers. The win gave Ceman and Whitmarsh each 900 "Michelob Light California Swing" points for the four men's events at Hermosa Beach, Huntington Beach, Santa Barbara and Manhattan Beach this season.
Ceman and Whitmarsh shared the $10,000 check for winning the "Michelob Light California Swing" men's title.

Sunday's play also determined the berths in the season-ending Paul Mitchell King and Queen of the Beach event in Las Vegas (September 6-9) at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The 10th annual King and fifth annual Queen of the Beach competitions will feature the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tours' top players.

The top 14 men and top 14 women players are determined based on their top three finishes on this year's AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. The points earned from these finishes will be totaled to determine a player's King and Queen of the Beach ranking. A player must compete in three AVP events to be eligible for King and Queen of the Beach competition. The domestic event in Clearwater was also used in determining the women's Queen of the Beach rankings.

QUOTES.
Barbra Fontana: "It's never over until we get to 21 and today we were playing a great team. We played very hard and we wanted to be more aggressive and it showed. We've come a long we as a team, but we still have a ways to go. We can both play on either side of the court which really helps us. Being back homeagain after a summer in Europe for a week really relaxed us and it was obvious today. We did a good job staying together when Lisa and Holly came from six points down in the second game to tie us at 19-19. "
Elaine Youngs: "I went back to serving the way I used too when I played with Liz (Masakayan)-not caring who I was serving to every time. Barb was veryflexible in this tournament mentally, changing things up because we had gotten kind of static in our play. Siding out was the difference in this match, we scored when they served a lot more than the opposite. We also got a couple of breaks for a change at the end of the second game when they made some mistakes."

QUOTES:
Metzger: "That's a great team we beat today. And to think they have only played two tournaments together. I gave up indoor volleyball after college and knew the beach was for me. Kevin and I have great chemistry on the court, even though we are so opposite in size, style and emotion. We are complimenting each other really good, but it's still unbelievable to win two AVP tournaments in a row, especially when you consider the competition. I'm in good shape, this is our 12th straight week of playing and I hope we can stay in the grove we're in right now."
Wong: "I can't believe my name is going up on the Manhattan Beach Pier with all those legends like Karch (Kiraly) and Sinjin (Smith). It took three games to win but we never felt totally in control, although we did start to get a little advantage in the final game. That's a scary team we were playing today. It feels so good to play on our home turf in the U.S. after all those months in Europe. I'm incredibly excited about the new AVP and look forward to spending most of my summer next year in my own country. But after the Goodwill Games, I'm looking forward to going to Las Vegas and leaving a winner."
