Today was the second day of the Omnitel Cup, the Italian leg of womens World Tour. During the end of the qualification tournament, twelve matches were play ed and eight teams made it into the main draw. The teams that qualified today ar e: Gooley-Sanderson(AUS), Stovickova-Felbabova(CZE), Glover-Cooper(ENG), Karadas siou-Sfyri(GRE), Laura Leticia-Galindo(MEX), Byberrg-Larsen(NOR), Benoit-Schlaef li(SUI), Wood-Blomquist(USA). Out of the tournament the Italians teams Marini-Fo lco, the Romano sisters, Sesti-Gavio anf Gizzi-Aondio, so there will be four I talian teams present in the main draw: Perrotta-Gattelli, Bruschini-Solazzi, De Marinis-Nascimento, Maran-Parenzan.
Even today, following yesterdays excellent start, there was a great atmosphe re in Vasto. The temperature set a new record reaching 43°C, with strong cross winds which rendered play very difficult. The crowds, exceeding 1200 people thr oughout the day, created an exciting frame for the tournament.
The match Marini-Folco (ITA)vs Benoit-Schaefli (SUI) 14-16 the last of the qu alification tournament was very much appreciated as was the match Wood-Blomquis t (USA)vs Davis-Jordan(USA) 15-13 . The surprise match Fink-Oigman(ISR) vs Ferre r-Blanco (CUB) caused great sensation due to the victory of the Israeli team. Fi nk-Oigman, at their first appearance on the beach volleyball circuit, were losin g 11-1 and managed to come back incredibly, finally winning with the score of 15 -13.
The matches of the main draw will begin tomorrow morning at 8 am, instead of the usual 9am, because in the afternoon there will be the important football m atch Italy vs France, valid for the quarter finals of the World Cup.
Starting yesterday, the top seeded players of the tournament started arriving to Vasto, players like:Behar-Shelda, Adriana Samuel-Sandra, Jackie-Monica, Arce -McPeak, Fontana-Halley, Manser-Pottharst.

VASTO, ITALY - Krista Blomquist and Ali Wood of the United States advanced to the main draw for this weekend's FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event by winning two matches here Thursday (July 2).
Blomquist and Wood, who also won two matches Wednesday during the opening day of qualifying for the third FIVB women's beach event of 1998, advanced with a 15-13 win over Annett Davis and Jenny Jordan of the United States. The 54-minute playoff match determined the fifth USA entry in this weekend's event.
Blomquist and Wood advanced to the playoff match with a 15-6 win over Audrey Cooper and Amanda Glover from England. Davis and Jordan downed Karadassiou and Sfyri of Greece 15-9.
Thursday's playoff win earned Blomquist and Wood their first main draw event of the 1998 season. The pair just missed qualifying for June's Toronto event (17-21) after dropping two of three qualifying matches to United States rivals Karolyn Kirby and Liz Masakayan (7-15, 15-12 and 3-15).
Blomquist was also eliminated from a main draw berth in the first 1998 event in Brazil (February 26-March 1) as she and Christine Schaefer dropped a 15-11 playoff match.
Vasto, Italy Open - 1st July
Today was the first day of the Omnitel Cup, the Italian leg of the women's World Tour. Forty-two teams were present for the two day qualification tournament. Sixty the matches were played today f the Italians played well. Marini-Folco (ITA) came to the end of first day without being defeated and have a good chance to take part in the main draw which will start from Friday 3rd July. Italians still competing in the losers' bracket are: the sisters Romano, Sesti-Gavio and Gizzi.Aondio. There was a great atmosphere in Vasto and a record temperature, 40° C with crows exceeding 1500 people during the day. The play of the Italians, the Cubans and the team from New Zealand was appreciated. Due to the extreme heat the players consumed over 1,200 bottles of water and many Kg. of fresh fruit. The matches continued until 8 pm due to the large number of teams competing. The matches of the qualification tournament will start tomorrow morning at 9 am. There was extensive media coverage of the Omnitel Cup including: Both national and regional newspapers like Gazzetta dello Sport, Il Messaggero, Il Tempo, il Centro and Radio RAI2. The national network RAI has already broadcast some images of Vasto at 6.30 pm during the television news on Channel 2 and further comments were broadcast on RAI3 at 7.45 pm and 10.45 pm.
