FIVB FINAL PRESS RELEASE August 4th, 1997

Magic ambiance at the Wörtersee

A record number of accredited journalists (110) for a World Tour event, and some 5,000 spectators enjoyed the magic ambiance created by the organizers of the Austrian Open in Klagenfurt on the edge of the Wortersee and felt being a real part of the show.

For the very first time in their career, Ahmann-Hager (Germany) reached the final. Though supported by a lot of tourists who cheeedr for them, the Germans could not win the gold medal game against the leaders of the FIVB World Ranking, Brazilian Zé Marco and Emanuel who made it to the final through the losers' bracket and did only a few mistakes in the last and most important match.

The event was sponsored by LAUDA AIR, and Niki Lauda, the former F1 World Champion, attended the competition and awarded the winners on Sunday.

After the tremendous success of this first edition, Klagenfurt is looking forward to stage a Men's Grand Slam next season and the excellent promoter is wishing to organize a women's Open in Vienna as well.

TELEVISION: ORF, Host Broadcaster in Klagenfurt, used the super slow motion, providing to millions of TV viewers a better understanding of the beauty of Beach Volleyball.

Bjorn Maaseide (Norway), appointed men's players' representative two weeks ago, will be assisted by Carl Henkel (USA), Oliver Stamm (Austria) and Andrea Ghiurghi (Italy).

At mid-August, the FIVB will relinquish the list of teams participating in the World Championships; the USA teams will enter the event on September 3rd.
