Rain in the morning threatened finals day at the World Tour event, Osaka. Half an hour before play was due to start, it cleared to a warm humid still day of 32 degrees.
The 1st semi-final between the No.1 seeds, Adriana Behar-Shelda (BRA) and Bruschini-Solazzi (ITA) was totally dominated by Brazilians from the outset. Fine serving by Shelda and excellent defensive work as a team saw Brazil jump to a 5-0 lead at the first change of ends. Italy tried in vain to recover, but were unsuccessful, and Adriana Behar-Shelda cruised to victory 15-3 in 31 minutes.
The 2nd semi-final between 2nd seeds Sandra Pires-Adriana Samuel (BRA) and 5th seeds McPeak-Arce (USA) promised to be a close, intense encounter. The Brazilians jumped out to a 4-1 lead at the net. The second change of ends saw the USA fight back to 4-6, with some dynamic `pick ups` and clever attacking shots. Brazil then `stepped up` a level and took control of the game by winning the next 5 points. USA tried valiantly to remain in the match, and managed to save 5 match points, but eventually lost 15-9 in 50 minutes.
The next and penultimate match was the game for 3rd and 4th between Bruschini-Solazzi (ITA) and McPeak-Arce (USA). This was expected to be a close match, as both teams had not played their best in their semi-finals. Italy started quickly and led 4-1, but USA fought back to win the next 10 points. McPeak dominating the back court like a cat, and Arce forming a wall at the net. USA convincingly won the game 15-6 in 36 minutes.
An all Brazil final to decide the World Tour event, Osaka. A large noisy record crowd of 2000 turned out in the hot 35 degrees sun, to cheer both sides on.
In what was always going to be a close match, Adriana Behar-Shelda (BRA) versus Sandra Pires-Adriana Samuel (BRA) exchange points early in the first set. At 5-5 after 27 minutes, a break was made and Adriana-Shelda edge to an 8-5 lead. They managed to hold this lead with some powerful accurate serving by Shelda, to win the set 12-8 in 48 minutes. The second set was a different story as Shelda and Adriana both served extremely tough, putting pressure on Sandra Pires and Adriana Samuel. This was too much and they ran away with the set 15-3 and the match, 2-0.
It was an exciting finish as the crowd erupted with jubilation in the hot sun.
The tour now moves to China for the next World Tour event.
