PRESS RELEASES
Lausanne, 21 March 1997
The 1997 FIVB Beach Volleyball Men's and Women's World Championships will be held
in Los Angeles on September 10th to 13th 1997 : a major event of the 1997 WORLD
TOUR with 600,000 US$ Prize Money !
After the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and before the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the
FIVB is pleased to announce the addition of two major events into the 1997 WORLD
TOUR calendar : the men's and women's Beach Volleyball World Championships
presented by Nike to be held in Los Angeles on September 10-13.
The FIVB celebrates the 50th year since its foundation in Paris in 1947 with
major events. With this World Championships, the FIVB is proud to reward men and
women on an equal footing - a unique opportunity in sports - with a total amount
of 600,000 US$ prize money (300,000 US$ for each event). The best teams in the
world, including most of the players who took part in the 1996 Olympic Games,
will compete in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, co-promoted by
Nike Sports Entertainment and Management Plus Enterprises. These events will be
staged at the L.A. Tennis Center on the UCLA Campus, unique sports facilities
with a capacity of 6,000 spectators.
The World Championships will be based on an open qualification, a main draw of 32
men's and 32 women's teams and a competition format with the innovation of single
elimination and all matches played 2 out of 3 sets, some being scheduled at
night! In addition, international 4-person games exhibitions, beach volleyball
camps as well as shows, will be organized during the events.
Nike, the first sport marketing company in the world, is determined to create a
world class premiere with these first events in the USA, in full respect of FIVB
high standards and requirements. "Nike is proud to be affiliated with the FIVB in
the staging of an event rivaled only by the Olympics" said Mr. Ian Campbell,
Managing Director of Nike Sports Entertainment, who added: "The opportunities for
men and women to command equal prize money is unprecedented and is further
evidence of Nike's commitment to women's athletics globally".
With the addition of the World Championships, the 1997 FIVB Beach Volleyball
season is off to a great start with a total of 24 events and 4.2 million US$
prize money!
