PRESS RELEASES

The first semi-final looked for 20 min. as like an easy win for the world ranking #1 team Para/Guilherme (BRA). They scored eight points before Child/Heese got to the scoreboard. But the Canadians were patient and after another 40 min. the final score was 15-11. In the second semi-final, Loiola/Emanuel needed more than an hour to defeat Ze Marco/Ricardo with 15-13.

In the bronze medal match, Pará and Guilherme solved the problems they had against Child/Heese and needed only 30 min. to get to the podium by an 15-1 victory over their countryfellows Ze Marco and Ricardo.

During the final more than 5.000 spectators saw an exciting match, in which the Brazilians Loiola and Emanuel was simply the better team. Child/Heese tried hard to remain in the match, but when the score reached 6-6 in the second set, the Canadian batteries seemed to be empty. After 8 matches already played in three days under the burning sun of Alanya they lost to Emanuel/Loiola with 7-12, 6-12.

Saturday, 12 Sept

Emanuel/Loiola, Pará/Guilherme and Ze Marco/Ricardo are the three South American Doubles on Sunday at Alanya Kleopatra Beach. The number one seeded Emanuel/Loiola were one step away from flying home. After loosing against Pará/Guilherme they were already down 10-14 against Prosser/Zahner. But the Australians could not score the final point and lost 14-16 because they had already played three matches in the heat of the day.

John Child and Mark Heese – the bronzemedallists of the 1996 Olympic Games – were put to the looser’s bracket on Friday. So they had to win six matches in a row to get to the semi-finals on Sunday. In one of the longest matches of the event, they won against Martinez/Conde (ARG) with 15-13. That was a battle of 75 min. and played around 1.00 p.m., when the temperature was again near to 40c in the shade.

The main draw’s first day of the Turkey Open 1998 in Alanya brought long matches under the hot sun. Loiola/Emanuel, Ze Marco/Ricardo and Guilherme/Pará went straight to the third round of the winner’s bracket. Paulão together with his new partner Jan – the brother of Pará – were sent to the looser’s bracket by the topseeded Loiola/Emanuel. At 7.15 p.m. their last match had to be stopped because of the dark, so that Jackson/Sotelo (MEX) vs. Paulão/Jan (BRA) will be restarted at 8.30 a.m tommorow morning.

On Alanya’s Kleopatra Beach all players were happy when some clouds arrived in the afternoon, dropping the temperature a little bit from 38c to 35c. More than 5.000 spectators were attending the matches and saw their Turkish team Simsek/Alpaslan playing a very good match against Seuseu/Eade (NZL) but finally lost 10-15 after 45 min. On Saturday, 19 matches will decide about the four semi-finalists, that will try to receive the goldmedal on Sunday.
