FIVB World Tour 1998: Favorites won in the first day of competions in Vitoria
Vitoria (Brazil) - 03.12.98 The teams that are figh ting for the title of the FIVB World Tour, started in a good way the 13th and last leg, which takes place at Camburi beach. Yestarday, (Thursday), in the first day of the Main Draw, the Brazilians Loiola/Emanuel and Guilherme/Par á, first and second in the ranking, respectively, and the Swiss Martin an d Paul Laciga, third, won their games, keeping good chances in the tournament fo r reaching the top ranking. Today (Friday), are scheduled 18 games, as of 9 am, with free entrances, which will ended the first part of this event and will apo int the semifinalist teams.
The opening of this tournament, in Vitoria, couldn't be better. In a shine and bright day, with the temperture reaching 37 degrees celsius, the 32 tea ms of 15 countries showed us great performances in Camburi Beach's sands. Although na eastern breeze was cooling, the strong heat made the players suffer in the sands. Despite of being a Thursday, lots of people were in the arena to watc h the games, mainly the Brazilian teams.
Emanuel and Loiola have done little efforts in the first part of this eve nt. In the first match, they beat Perez and Lopes, from Cuba, by 15/3. In the se cond match, they defeated the Argentinians Depiaggio and Guemberena by 15/6. &qu ot; We had concentrated and accurated performances. This is very important in a high level match" , said Loiola. Their first opponents on Friday will be t he team Laciga/Laciga, in a very important match for the Swiss. The Swiss played hard matches. They beat the Americans Smith and Heidger in the first match by 1 5/11, reapeting the same score against the Brazilians Anjinho and Fred.
Guilherme and Pará had to make more efforts than the other Brazili an teams. In the first match they defeated the Mexicans Sotelo and Ibarra by 15/ 7 in almost one hour. In the second and most difficult match of the day, they de feated Kvalheim/Maaseide, from Norway, by 15/13. Their first challenger of this day is the Canadian team, Leinemann/Holden.
Happyness to some of them, and sadness for the other. Among 32 teams, 16 have already said " goodbye" to the competition. The American Sinjin Smith is one of them. Considered the " King of the Rio", with 5 titles in that city, this is the first time he is playing with his new partner, Heidger , in one tournament of the FIVB World Tour. They have lost their two first games , against Laciga/Laciga(SWI) and Blanton/Fonoimoana(USA).
The last stage of the FIBV/World Tour, Vitória leg, has been organ ized and promoted by Koch Tavares, with the supervision of International Volley- Ball Federation. The sponsors are Banco do Brasil, Olympikus, MasterCard and Con sul with support of the Vitoria City Hall.

Vitiuria (BRAZIL) - The FIVB Men's World Tour finishes on this weekend, with the 13th leg at Camburi beach, in Vituria (BR). As of today (Thursday), 32 teams representing 15 countries, initialize the hard way to the title and to the first positions in the world ranking of the International Volley-ball Federation FIVB. The Main Draw has scheduled 40 matches for today, at 9 pm, underlining the Brazilian teams Emanuel/Loiola and Guilherme and Para, the first and the second places in the world ranking, respectively. At all, the Brazilian beach volleyball will present seven teams in the competition, three of the ranking, one wild card and three coming from the qualifying tournament.
The qualifying tournament, that finished yesterday (Wednesday), apointed the last eight teams that will compose the Main Draw. The Latins are going well, conquering seven vacancies: Lula/Adriano(BRA), Anjinho/Fred(BRA), Depiaggio/Guemberena(ARG), Sotelo/Ibarra(MEX), Velasco/De Jesus(PUR) and Perez/Lopez Rios(CUB). The Americans Ceman and Jewell complete the list.
The FIVB World Tour comes to its end with three teams having chances to conquer the World Tour's title. Loiola and Emanuel, the leaders in the ranking with 2790 points, depend on their own results to guarantee the title. The same happens to Guilherme and Para, with 2756 points, depending on their good performances to overtake their Brazilian opponent. The Swiss Laciga brothers, third place in the ranking, need to win the leg and cheer against the Brazilians, that must reach worse than twelveth.
The VitM-sria leg gather some of the best teams of the Circuit. Besides the three first places in the ranking, other open champion-teams in other 98 stages are confirmed: Ze-Marco/Ricardo(BRA), the winners in Rio and Marseille; Martizez/Conde(ARG), first position in Toronto; and Kjemperud/Hoidalem(NOR), the winners in Berlin. Three Olimpic medalists play in this leg: the Canadians Child/Heese, bronze medal in Atlanta's Beach Volleyball, and the Brazilian Carlco, gold in Barcelona's Indoor Volleyball(92), who will play with his partner Paulo Emmlio elected the best beach volleyball player in the world in 92. The American Sinjin Smith, considered the King of Rio in the past, with five titles in that city, is also in this tournament, with his partner Heidger. This is the first time they play together in the FIVB World Tour and they have a FIVB Wild Card.
The first part of this event is supposed to be hold in two days, today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday). The teams are using the system of double elimination: they need to lose twice to be out of the competition. The semifinals happens on Satturday, at 9 pm, live broadcasted by Globo Television Network. The losers will play for third place on Sunday, at 8:30. The great final will be hold at 9:30, live broadcasted by Globo Television Network
