National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)

The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the organization through which the nation's colleges and universities

speak and act on athletics matters at the national level. It is a voluntary association of more than 1,200 institutions, conferences, organizations and individuals devoted to the sound administration of intercollegiate athletics.

About 323,226 student-athletes participated in NCAA-sponsored sports in 1995-96, the highest ever. This number is significantly higher than in previous years because, for the first time, it includes both the 902 active and 96 provisional members of the NCAA. However, participation at active member schools is estimated to be a record high as well, approximately 304,671 compared to last year's record of 299,608. The gains were primarily in women's sports with

men's participation remaining almost flat.
