Sixty-four teams are selected to compete in the
NCAA volleyball tournament. First and second round matches will be played at
the site of one of the participating universities. Sixteen teams will advance
to four regional championships (four schools per regional) played at the site
of one of the participating universities on December 9-12, 1999. The four
regional champions will compete at the NCAA Championship in Hawai'i on December
16 & 18, 1999.
UH Hosts 1999 NCAA Women's Volleyball
Tournament
For the second time in school history, the University of Hawai'i
will host the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship. The 1999 edition will take
place on Dec. 16 & 18 at the 10,300-seat Stan Sheriff Center on the UH
Lower Campus.
UH hosted its first NCAA final four in 1989 at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.
That year Long Beach State denied the Wahine a chance to play at home for the
championship, ousting UH in the Northwest Regional finals. The Beach went on to
defeat Nebraska in the NCAA championship match before 5,693 at Blaisdell
Center. Texas-Arlington and UCLA made up the rest of the field.
The Rainbow Wahine have called the Stan Sheriff Center home for the past five
years. Each year they have led the nation in attendance while averaging over
7,000 per contest. In each of the last four years, UH has eclipsed the 100,000
mark in season attendance becoming the only school in NCAA history to
accomplish that feat.
In May 1998, the Stan Sheriff Center was the site for the NCAA Men's Volleyball
Championship. Loyal UH volleyball fans set final four records for single-match
attendance (9,822) and two-day total attendance (18,901).
