UCLA, making its 21st NCAA championship appearance, has won 16 championships and placed second four times. The Bruins' record is 44-5.
Despite a loss to Pepperdine in the MPSF finals, there was never a doubt of making it to the tournament in head coach Al Scates' mind. "The chairman of the committee told me that we were going, win or lose, before the match," Scates said. "It took the edge off a little bit for me, but we still tried to beat them."
Pepperdine is making its 9th championship appearance and has a record of 12-4. Pepperdine has won four NCAA men's volleyball titles, most recently in 1992.
