MASAKAYAN/YOUNGS RALLY TO CAPTURE EVIAN BEACH VOLLEYBALL OPEN

CHICAGO, ILL. - Liz Masakayan and Elaine Youngs became the lowest seeded team to win an Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event as the 12th-seeded pair rallied to defeat top-seeded Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak 16-14 in the finals of the $50,000 Evian Open presented by Bravo Card here Sunday (July 13).

The previous best finish by a lower seeded team was by ninth-seeded Linda Hanley and Angela Rock when the pair won the 1995 Puerto Rico event by upsetting fifth-seeded McPeak and Nancy Reno.

Trailing 10-2 and 14-9 in the championship match that will be replayed July 19 on ABC Sports, Masakayan and Youngs withstood five match points by Arce and McPeak to win their first pro beach volleyball title together.

Masakayan and Youngs tied the match at 14-14 on an Arce hitting error. The winners took the lead for good on a Masakayan kill and won the match on Young's deep service ace past Arce.

The win was Masakayan's 36th professional victory as she won her first Evian Tour event since 1995, when she teamed with Karolyn Kirby to capture the eight-team Evian Invitational in Newport, R. I. (July 2).

Youngs, a member of the United States' indoor volleyball team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, posted her first title in only her fourth Evian Tour event.

Masakayan and Youngs shared $11,000 for the win on North Avenue Beach while Arce and McPeak, who dropped a 15-7 match earlier Sunday to Masakayan and Youngs, split $8,100 for second. Arce and McPeak had won six of the previous nine Evian Tour events this season while Masakayan and Youngs become just the third team to win a domestic title this season.

After losing to Masakayan and Youngs, Arce and McPeak rebounded with wins over second-seeded Kirby and Reno (15-8) and seventh- seeded Krista Blomquist and Christine Schaefer (15-9) to reach the finals. Masakayan and Youngs downed fourth-seeded Karrie Poppinga and Rock 15-12 to reach the championship match.

Blomquist and Schaefer, who upset Kirby and Reno 15-11 in Saturday's final match, split $5,700 for finishing third after downing Poppinga and Rock 15-4. Poppinga and Rock, who injured her right knee in the tournament semifinals, split $4,100 for fourth.

CHICAGO, ILL. - Led by Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak, 32 teams have entered this weekend's (July 12-13) Evian Open presented by Bravo Court.

The ninth of 13 stops on the 1997 Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, the $50,000 Evian Open presented by Bravo Card opens at 9 a.m. (EDT) Saturday (July 12) with the 32 teams vying for the $11,000 first-place prize.

The event will be staged on five beach volleyball courts on North Avenue Beach with 44 matches Saturday starting at 9 a.m. (CDT). Twelve (12) teams advance to Sunday's final rounds starting at 8 a.m. with elimination matches.

The Evian Open semi-finals are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Sunday. The final two teams battle for the title on North Avenue Beach's center court at approximately 3 p.m. ABC Sports will tape the championship match for replay July 19 at 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Arce and McPeak will be seeking their third-straight pro beach win as the Evian Tour's top-ranked team captured the Ocean Pacific U. S. Open June 29 at Huntington Beach, Calif. before winning an FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event last Sunday (July 6) in Pescara, Italy.

The third-ranked team on the international circuit, Arce and McPeak have won their last 13 matches and 35 of their last 37 starts with their only defeats being to Karolyn Kirby and Nancy Reno (16-14 May 11 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. and 15-11 June 22 at Atlantic City, N. J.).

The Arce/McPeak and Kirby/Reno tandems are the only teams to win Evian Tour events this season as Arce and McPeak have captured events in Miami Beach, Fla. (April 6), Deerfield Beach, Fla. (April 20), Austin, Tex. (May 18), San Diego, Calif. (June 1), Irving, Tex. (June 15) and Huntington Beach.

Kirby and Reno, who have won nine pro beach volleyball crowns enroute to a 85-25 career mark together, completed championship runs in Lake Buena Vista and Atlantic City. The second-seeded team this weekend, Kirby and Reno won the 1992 Evian National Championships and the 1993 FIVB World Championships together.

The Arce/McPeak win in Italy also snapped a string of five-straight international titles for women's pro beach volleyball teams from Brazil. Arce and McPeak was the last non-South American team to win an FIVB last August in Pusan, Korea.

The Italy win was the 12th title in 21 pro beach starts for Arce and McPeak, who have captured 10 Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour championships in 15 domestic events. Overall, McPeak has now won 46 pro beach titles, including eight internationally, while Arce was netting her 12 crown.

Arce and McPeak have now posted a 115-17 pro match mark together with 20 final four finishes. The Arce/McPeak team identical 3-3 match mark against Sandra Pires and Jackie Silva, the gold medalists at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, and Kirby and Reno.

Winners of 81 of 89 domestic matches together, Arce and McPeak are now the top money leaders on both the Evian Tour ($41,050 each) and FIVB ($26,000 each) circuits. Arce and McPeak have never finished lower than fourth in any of their six FIVB starts as the tandem has now posted a 34-9 international mark together.

The Evian Open presented by Bravo Card is a "homecoming" for eight Evian Tour regulars, including Reno, Erin Borske, Christine Federico, Stacey Kammes, Jeanette Kollasch, Nancy Mason, Amy Matthews and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop. Shupryt-Knoop teams with Elaine Roque as the sixth-seeded team while Mason plays with Carrie Busch as the 23rd-seeded tandem and Kollasch teams with Julie James as the 20th-seeded pair. The Kammes/Matthews and Borske/Federico tandems are seeded 24th and 26th, respecitvely.
